Medical Center of Newark

"The concept has always been for the facilities to be designed, controlled and nurtured by the physicians." – JIM HAVENS

The physician-owned Medical Center of Newark is a $15 million, two story, 45,000-square-foot expansion of the Newark Ambulatory Surgery Center. The expansion was necessary due to the increasing number of surgical procedures performed at the Surgery Center.

Also driving the expansion was the rising population growth in Licking County, along with estimates that up to 50 percent of the county's patients go elsewhere for medical treatment.

The enlarged, 67,500-square-foot Medical Center provides four operating rooms, three treatment rooms, an expanded imaging operation, 33 inpatient beds for patients requiring overnight stays, a laboratory, pharmacy, and cafeteria. Medical and surgical treatment covers 23 specialties, including orthopedics, pain management, gastroenterology and general surgery.

Carefully planned with extensive physician input, the facility includes the latest in healthcare management and amenities: single patient private rooms, a specialized emergency department, the latest in information technologies with single data entry and wireless communications.

Scout Development Limited syndicates, owns, manages, finances and constructed the facility. Jim Havens formed Scout as a medical development partnership to manage the Surgery Center expansion. Dr. Alex Juan and Dr. Donald Jones, the former Surgery Center's founders, are the other Scout partners.

Located in the McMillen Business Center on Newark's west side, the Center joins a complex that includes a medical imaging center, pharmacy, Veterans Administration clinic, an urgent-care center, sleep laboratory and offices for seven physician groups.
